We got rained on several times this week as we sent students out to recess only to have it start raining a few minutes later. Unfortunately we had to postpone our Mix It Up at Lunch Day last week, but we’ll try again this Thursday. We have a mixed forecast again for the week ahead, so since conditions change quickly, please remind your child to pack layers, including a water-resistant jacket and/or an umbrella (and remember to label those layers with your child’s name!). We try to get outside for recess unless it’s really raining hard, so dressing for the weather makes a difference for warmth and comfort. Please also remember to drive with extra caution on rainy days. We have an increase of cars on and around campus on rainy days. Please be sure to follow our traffic rules in the parking lot and be cautious driving around campus. Despite the weather, our Eagles had some great experiences last week. Thanks to everyone who joined us for our Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day on Wednesday. Be sure to ask your 4th Graders about the artifacts they got to see from California missions or ask your 5th Graders about our author visit on Friday. Thanks to PTA, SCEF, and the Reading Bug for making these opportunities possible for our students. You can see photos from our walk here and our assemblies here. Thanks to our yearbook coordinator Paulo Dutra for being around to capture so many great moments. This week our students will be able to experience a Virtual Reality (VR) lesson tied to something they are learning in class during their library time with special VR headsets and support from our district educational services team. A bit later this month, all Arroyo students will have the opportunity to go on a field trip. Our 4th Graders will be visiting the Cantor Arts Center and Anderson Collection on the Stanford campus. 5th Graders will be visiting the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Both groups will travel by school bus and will need parent chaperones to help supervise students. Field trip permission slips are a part of the registration information you completed last spring, but all families need to complete a Google form acknowledging the trip that will include chaperone sign-ups and lunch options. You should have received an email last week with details and the form to complete. If you missed it, you can find the 4th Grade form here and 5th Grade form here. Eagle Council is hosting our final community service drive of the year with Samaritan House, and they have decided to make it a grade-level competition to see whether 4th or 5th Graders bring in more donations. We’ll be collecting breakfast items (cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, coffee, tea, cocoa, creamer, etc). Donations can be dropped off in the blue bins in the office, and be sure to put them in the bin labeled with the right grade level. Donations will be accepted through Monday, March 11. We will also have a collection bin in the office for new or gently used shoes in support of a ROPES project from some Arroyo alumni. March is the month when we ask for feedback from our students, families, and staff in San Carlos. The student survey includes questions like “Do you feel like you are a part of this school?” and “Are you given a chance to help decide school activities or rules?” The answers we get from our Eagles are one source of data to help us to evaluate the success of our efforts to create a strong sense of belonging and make Arroyo the best possible school for 4th and 5th Graders. You do have to give permission for your child to participate in the survey, however, so please watch for a separate email from me tomorrow, so that you can opt your child in. We also highly value your feedback as parents and members of our school community. Your survey covers topics like how well we communicate with you, how well we support students, the state of our facilities, and more. Your input is vital, is discussed in depth with staff, and becomes part of our site goal-setting each year. It typically takes 10 minutes or less to complete, so we would be so grateful if you could complete it as soon as you receive the link tomorrow. I want to remind you as we head into March and the final trimester of the school year: every day counts! Unless your child is too sick to attend, we need each student in school, building friendships and mastering grade-level content, every day. As we head into the spring trimester, we have a number of assessments and important curriculum to cover, and missing school gets increasingly challenging. We also have more fun in store and certainly don’t want anyone missing out! And finally, March brings one more opportunity: the chance to vote! I’ve mailed in my ballot already, and I hope you vote on the March 5 ballot, too, whether in person or via the mail. Our 5th Graders learn about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, so it’s also a great chance to talk with your child about why voting is a protected right in our country and how it makes a difference in our local, state, and national democracy. Warmly, Breakfast and Lunch This WeekPlease take time to review the menu for next week with your child. If they do not see a breakfast and/or lunch option that they will eat, then please plan to help them pack their own lunch from home (or a hearty snack on Wednesday), and please send your child with a snack for morning recess regardless. PTA NewsRegister for Stampede & Soar! It’s time to register your student to join the Arroyo Eagles and Central Mustangs as they Stampede & Soar through the City of Good Living! Focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and BelongingWomen’s History MonthWomen’s History Month is a time to honor women’s contributions in American History. It grew out of a one-week celebration started in 1978 by the school district of Sonoma, California, and slowly spread across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8 as Women’s History Week, and in 1987 it was expanded to a month. Find more information here.
