The period between our February break and Spring Break is fairly short but will be very busy as we wrap up the second trimester and head into the third. Classes will be completing benchmark assessments in reading, writing, and math, as well as finishing other classroom lessons and projects. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is not missing school during this time unless they are sick. March 8 is the last day of the second trimester. We expect report cards to be sent home around March 20. 4th Graders will rotate to their 3rd round of the Exploratory Wheel on March 11. We have some exciting events happening this week! Join us Wednesday morning for our Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. We’ll meet at the Burton Park baseball bleachers on the corner of Brittan and Cedar at 8:10 a.m. and will begin walking to Arroyo by 8:20. Students will have the opportunity to make signs on Monday and Tuesday to carry with them and are encouraged to bring them on the walk. Ruby Bridges bracelets, buttons, and stickers will be handed out. First come, first served. Parents are encouraged to join us! See below for more details. On Thursday, Arroyo will have a special Mix It Up at Lunch Day, planned by some of our Eagle Council student leaders. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign that encourages students to identify, question, and cross social boundaries. Instead of eating lunch with their usual friend groups on Thursday, students will be assigned a group based on their birthday. Each group will have a leader from Eagle Council and a list of questions to help start conversations as a means of helping students form new connections. On Friday, 4th and 5th Graders will enjoy special guest presenters. Our 5th Graders will hear from fantasy author Misa Sugiura. It’s not too late to order signed copies of Sugiura’s books (last day is tomorrow, Feb. 26). 4th Graders will rotate through a presentation that brings California Missions alive with a mixture of genuine artifacts, interactive storytelling, and edgy humor. The students will handle Spanish Colonial artifacts, and will learn about the Spanish settling of Alta California and why missions were built from 1769 to 1833. Through a combination of humorous play-acting and stories, they will learn about mission daily life and the lives of native inhabitants of Spanish California. 5th Graders will have a similar experience later this spring about the American Revolution. These presentations are made possible by your donations to SCEF. Please watch your email over the next few days for information about field trips for all Arroyo students toward the end of March. Our 4th Graders will be visiting the Cantor Museum and Anderson Collection on the Stanford campus. 5th Graders will be visiting the Exploratorium. Both groups will travel by school bus and will need parent chaperones to help supervise students. Field trip permission slips are a part of the registration information you completed last spring, but all families will need to complete a Google form acknowledging the trip that will include chaperone sign-ups and lunch options. Those forms will be linked in the email coming soon. Eagle Council is hosting our final community service drive of the year with Samaritan House, and they have decided to make it a grade-level competition to see whether 4th or 5th Graders bring in more donations. We’ll be collecting breakfast items (cereal, oatmeal, pancake mix, coffee, tea, cocoa, creamer, etc). Donations can be dropped off in the blue bins in the office, and be sure to put them in the bin labeled with the right grade level. Donations will be accepted through Monday, March 11. We will also have a collection bin in the office for new or gently used shoes in support of a ROPES project from some Arroyo alumni. Finally, if you haven’t done so, please complete the annual Intent to Return form regarding your child’s enrollment for the next school year that was sent to all families on Feb. 12. Your timely completion of this form will assist SCSD in having the most accurate numbers for returning students for next year, which is directly tied to the SCSD budget and will allow District staff to plan more effectively. Please fill out one form for each child by March 1, 2024. If your plans change at any time and you are not planning to return next year, please notify your school office as soon as possible. Thank you for your assistance with this important process. Warmly, Breakfast and Lunch This WeekPlease take time to review the menu for next week with your child. If they do not see a breakfast and/or lunch option that they will eat, then please plan to help them pack their own lunch from home (or a hearty snack on Wednesday), and please send your child with a snack for morning recess regardless.
