Principal’s Message

Dear Arroyo families,

Welcome back and happy new year! I hope you have had a wonderful Winter Break and enjoyed connecting with family and friends and making great memories.  

School resumes on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Our staff will be back on the 8th working on developing PBL units for the spring with our trainer from PBL Works. As I mentioned before the break, many classes will be starting new units and activities on Jan. 9, so as long as your child is healthy, please ensure that they are in school for the first day back. 

San Carlos Week of the Family starts on Friday, Jan. 19. Please take a look at all of the events the city has planned and consider participating. It’s a great way to spend time together as a family. Whether at those activities or elsewhere, we hope you’ll set aside a little extra time to spend as a family throughout that week.   

Remember that there is no school on Monday, Jan. 15, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. I encourage you to consider finding a way for your family to get involved in this National Day of Service. 

I look forward to seeing our Eagles back at school on Tuesday!

Breakfast and Lunch This Week

Please take time to review the menu for next week with your child. If they do not see a breakfast and/or lunch option that they will eat, then please plan to help them pack their own lunch from home (or a hearty snack on Wednesday), and please send your child with a snack for morning recess regardless.

Chickens’ Ball: A Comedy Tonight!

The San Carlos Chickens’ Ball is a live and ridiculously funny variety show benefiting SCSD schools. Organizers are looking for musicians, actors, singers, and dancers age 16 and older. Auditions will be in the MUR at Heather Elementary School on:

• Thursday, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.
• Saturday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. 

Just show up and check in at the door. Singers, please bring your music. 

The event also needs costume and set designers, set builders and painters, those who can sew, and a stage crew.

• April 26 evening
• April 27 matinee and evening
• April 28 evening

Watch your email for an invitation to a Leadership Circle Appreciation Party on Friday, Jan. 26, at La Honda Winery. Donors who were at the Leadership Circle level last school year and anyone who has joined the Leadership Circle this year will receive an invitation.

New Student Priority Registration Opens Jan. 9

Happy New Year, San Carlos families! SCSD New Student Priority Registration for the 2024-25 school year opens this Tuesday, Jan. 9, and closes Feb. 9. If you have a future student joining us, secure their spot by registering during this priority window. Visit our How to Register for the 2024-25 School Year page for al the details. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page or email us at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Current TK-7th Grade families, please note: New Student Priority Registration is ONLY for students who are not currently attending our schools. Students who are in TK-8th Grade now do not need to re-register; they will automatically matriculate into the next grade level or feeder school through 8th Grade. In February, a Google survey will be sent out to all current families regarding plans for fall, and in April, parents will fill out their Back-to-School Forms for 2024-25. However, if your child is in one of our SCSD preschool classes, they DO need to register as a new student.

Transitional Kindergarten Is Expanding!

Attention, parents of 4-year-olds: If your child turns 5 on or between Sept. 2, 2024 and June 2, 2025, they can attend TK beginning in August. Priority Registration for the 2024-25 school year opens this Tuesday, Jan. 9.

For all incoming TK and Kindergarten families who will be NEW in the 2024-25 school year, attend your school’s TK/K Parent Information Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 31:

• 8:00-8:45 a.m. at White Oaks
• 8:45-9:45 a.m. at Arundel
• 4:00-4:30 p.m. at Brittan Acres and Heather

It’s Time to Enroll Your New TK Student in the TK Extended Learning Program (TKELP)

The SCSD Transitional Kindergarten Extended Learning Program (TKELP) is accepting registrations for the 2024-25 school year.

TKELP is dedicated to enriching our littlest learners’ lives after school. We provide a fun, safe, and welcoming place for our TK students to spend time each day. Through daily physical activity, Legarza sports, JamaRoo Kids Dance, and STEAM enrichment, TKers will explore, invent, and discover new ways to create. We provide a developmentally appropriate space with enriching activities where students can thrive. Visit our TKELP website to learn more about our program and meet our staff!

The program is available to TK students at all four elementary schools — Arundel, Brittan Acres, Heather, White Oaks — and students are given priority into the ACE enrichment program in their Kindergarten year!
