EDITOR’S NOTE
The next Eagle Eye newsletter comes out Feb. 26. Have a great Mid-Winter Break!
Dear Arroyo families,
This is another big celebration week at Arroyo! I hope you are checking out the SCEF auction and bidding on opportunities for your child like outings with their teacher or being principal for a day. The auction closes Monday night, so be sure to get your bids in for these once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. See below for additional auction items and details.
On Tuesday we will celebrate Valentine’s Day. Students are encouraged to wear valentine colors (red, pink, purple, etc.) and turn in valentine art to help decorate our Learning Commons. Class celebrations are planned for the afternoon. See your teacher’s newsletter for more information.
Join us Wednesday morning for our Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. We’ll meet at the Burton Park baseball bleachers on the corner of Brittan and Cedar at 8:10 a.m. and will begin walking to Arroyo by 8:20. Students will have the opportunity to make signs on Monday and Tuesday to carry with them and are encouraged to bring them on the walk. Ruby Bridges bracelets, buttons, and stickers will be handed out. First come, first served. Parents are encouraged to join us! See below for more details and to volunteer.
4th and 5th grade math can be challenging, especially for parents! Susan Resnick, our Math in Focus Consultant and one of the authors of the curriculum, will be hosting a parent education night for parents of SCSD 4th and 5th Graders on Wednesday, Feb. 15 from 7:15-8 in the boardroom of the district office (1200 Industrial Rd., Unit 9B). Susan will share ideas for supporting your student at home. This session will include a brief overview of the success behind Singapore Math and the key instructional strategies that have led to Singapore's place as top in the world in mathematics. Additionally, Susan will give you practical ideas for helping your student at home, whether they need more scaffolding or enrichment. You will learn about number bonds, bar modeling, long division, and other approaches that might look a little different from how math looked when you went to school.
The period between our February break and Spring Break is fairly short but will be very busy as we wrap up the second trimester and head into the third. Classes will be completing benchmark assessments in reading, writing, and math as well as finishing other classroom lessons and projects. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is not missing school during this time unless they are sick. March 3 is the last day of the second trimester. We expect report cards to be sent home the week of March 13.
As we head into our February break next week (Feb. 20-24), we will again be sending home covid tests with students to help ensure a safe return. Please test your child before sending them to school on Monday, Feb. 27. Note that the expiration date on the box has been amended by the FDA to November 2023 instead of February. If your child tests positive or you need additional test kits, please contact Tracey Olazar ([email protected]) in the office. For more information, please refer to the SCSD Health and Safety Plan.
Please also take note of the following upcoming events:
-
March 3, Arroyo Principal’s Coffee: Join me and fellow Arroyo parents and guardians from 8:45-9:45 a.m. for coffee, community building, and a Q&A.
-
March 6, California Distinguished School Award Assembly: Join us first thing in the morning as we celebrate this great accomplishment as a community. Details coming soon.
-

Let’s Walk Together in Honor of Ruby Bridges for Black History Month
Arroyo students have been learning about important Black leaders throughout U.S. history in their classrooms and in the library this month. One of these leaders rose to fame as a 6-year-old when she became the first African-American to integrate an elementary school in the South in November 1960. Her name is Ruby Bridges. Today, Ruby is 68 years old (pictured), and every November, communities across the country walk to school together to honor her bravery. Because of Outdoor Ed, Arroyo moved our Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day to this Wednesday, Feb. 15, in honor of Black History Month.
We would love for Eagles and their families to join us in walking together to school as a community:
When: Wednesday, Feb. 15, 8:10 a.m.
Where: Corner of Brittan Ave. and Cedar St., at the bleachers.
What: Ruby Bridges bracelets, buttons and stickers will be handed out to participants. First come, first served. Students will have the opportunity to make signs to carry with them and are encouraged to bring them on the walk. We will begin walking to Arroyo together by 8:20 a.m.
Volunteer Opportunity: We could use help passing out bracelets, buttons and stickers that morning. If you have a few minutes to help, it would be greatly appreciated! Sign up here.
Black History Month
Each February, Black History Month serves as both a celebration and a powerful reminder that Black history is American history. In celebration and reflection of Black History Month, the Community Foundation of San Carlos (CFSC) has curated a list of resources to honor and recognize the achievements of Black Americans as well as a list of Black-owned businesses and organizations to support. If you are interested in learning more about CFSC, please reach out!
Feb. 15: Downtown Specific Plan Community Workshop
The San Carlos community is invited to participate in the second Downtown Specific Plan Community Workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 15, from 7-8:30 p.m. Register for the interactive virtual workshop here. This workshop will center on concepts around placemaking and the public realm such as street concepts for Laurel Street, public gathering spaces, pedestrian paseos/walkways, and alley enhancements.
To learn more about these draft concepts and to share input, visit sancarlosdowntownplan.com. The City of San Carlos wants to hear from its residents, property owners, and business operators — a good plan involves everyone!
After-School Class at Arroyo: Introduction to Mindfulness
This interactive class will explore evidence-based mindfulness techniques through art, games, and STEAM activities that are designed to promote self-regulation, resilience, and overall well-being.
When children practice mindfulness it has been shown to reduce reactivity and stress, and helps to improve focus, cognitive performance, ability to resolve conflicts, social skills, impulse control, self-awareness, and resilience. If you have taken a Growing Mindful class before, please note there will be new curriculum. All beginners welcome! Sign up here.
