Arroyo Eagle Eye - 4/24/22

Principal's Message

Dear Arroyo Families,

As we approach the end of April, I wanted to give you a heads up on a few things that will be coming at the beginning of May:

  • State testing will begin the week of May 2. Students will be taking both performance tasks (PT) and computer adaptive tests (CAT) in math and language arts. 5th graders will also take the California Science Test (CAST), as well as math placement tests (which will be given this week). Testing will occur during our first block of the morning on Tuesdays through Fridays throughout the first 3 weeks of May. Please avoid any unnecessary absences during this testing window and make sure students arrive at school on time. Getting a good night's sleep and having a healthy breakfast are important in helping students do their best. Students will not be permitted to have electronic devices (cell phones, smart watches, etc.) in the classroom during testing windows. Additional information for parents can be found here.
  • Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week is May 2-6. Please watch for communication from your child’s room parent, and thanks in advance for helping to celebrate our amazing Arroyo staff!
  • Wednesday, May 4 is SCEF Day! Students should wear green! Thanks for supporting our San Carlos Education Foundation with your time and donations!

Many of us have been looking for ways to support Ukrainian children. On Wednesday, April 27 after school, PTA and Eagle Council will be collaborating to sell sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine and a symbol of peace. Sunflowers will be $5 each (cash and Venmo accepted) and all proceeds will benefit Save the Children Ukraine

This week we celebrate Administrative Assistant’s Day and I want to extend a HUGE shout out and thank you to our phenomenal school secretary, Tracey Olazar! Thank you Tracey for all that you do for our community!

Finally, Tracey asked me to pass along a few attendance-related reminders:

  • When dropping off your child after an appointment please come into the office and sign in your student. We are required to have this information with our attendance records.
  • If your child has any symptoms at all, please keep them home and administer a Covid test before they return to school. San Mateo County is seeing an uptick in Covid cases again and many symptoms mimic the allergies and colds that are also running rampant right now. Please monitor your child closely and err on the side of caution to help keep our community safe.

Warmly,

Mindy Shelton
Principal

HONORARY SERVICE AWARD NOMINATIONS
Do you know someone that runs a PTA program or committee, makes sure school events go off without a hitch, or tackles the big projects? Have you noticed someone whose contributions are often behind the scenes, but add up in a very big way?

Every year the PTA presents Honorary Service Awards to individuals who provide significant contributions and outstanding service at CMS and Arroyo. Please take the time to nominate the people around you whose special contributions go above and beyond. They deserve a big thanks from us!

Send your nominations to Kirsten Kell or use the online submission form.

Staff Appreciation
This month we are treating Arroyo and Central staff with a sandwich and salad lunch! Please sign up to help with the April 27 lunch here. Bring your items to your school office by Wed April 27 11am.

Thank you for helping us celebrate our wonderful teachers and staff!  Mark your calendars for National Staff Appreciation week May 2–6, 2022 and stay-tuned for more information on what we have planned for them throughout the week.

Kind regards,
The Staff Appreciation Team
